Training with Disabilities
19:00 – 20:30
It is so important to listen to our bodies and learn their language.  This self awareness is imperative to understanding when it is okay to push and when we need to rest and rehabilitate. In this lecture with Kimberleigh Roseblade we will discuss topics that include: Working with mental and physical illness, injuries, and restrictions.  How to listen to your body’s needs and adapt your training accordingly.  What coaches and teachers can do to create a better environment allowing their disabled and neuro-divergent students to thrive. Pas de Deux
20:00 – 21:30
When training with others, we demonstrate trust that our partners will keep us safe and help us to develop to our greatest potential as martial artists. Our partners demonstrate the same trust in us. Therefore, it is part of our responsibility as martial artists to learn the skills needed to better help those around us. When we become better training partners, we benefit not only our peers, but also the art itself and our own practice. In this overview, we will explore both introspective and practical strategies that can be applied to improve as a training partner in HEMA. These strategies will form the basis of a toolkit to enable both you and your drill partners to get the most possible benefit from training together. We will discuss approaches to help you effectively mentor fellow practitioners of all experience levels; get more out of training when skill differentials are present; mitigate frustration and burnout; and improve communication between you and your partner. In a Real Swordfight
20:00 – 21:30
In the HEMA community, a common topic of discussion is the idea of realism in fights. Such discussions often involve seemingly plausible but flawed assumptions about what “real sword fights” are like: that real sword fights have no rules and that the more violent and brutal a fighter is, the more realistically they are behaving. This lecture will address these misconceptions about realism in violence by providing a more nuanced way of understanding violence that acknowledges its variety, as well as examining historical accounts of real sword fights from 16th century Germany to illustrate the legal and social norms that regulated the behavior of fighters in violent encounters.
