  This class will explore ballet movements and how they relate to sword techniques. We will explore Rapier corollaries in this first installment as the direct influences are the most apparent with this weapon. Expect some oddball things. We are exploring items I've been mulling over of late so we shall see what really works and what doesn't quite fit. A journey into the Iron and Bronze Ages where we will understand ore mining and smelting, take a look at  swords of antiquity, and move into the swords of the Migration Era and Viking Age.  We will then move into Typologies, Medieval Swords, and the geometry in medieval life and sword design.  Finally we will see how this evolution has impacted sword designs as they are applied to fencing. This lecture will explore the context of wrestling in medieval Europe to help build a deeper understanding of wrestling for HEMA. We’ll construct a looking glass into the past by consulting contemporary art and literature, living folk wrestling styles, and words from the medieval masters.
