When training with others, we demonstrate trust that our partners will keep us safe and help us to develop to our greatest potential as martial artists. Our partners demonstrate the same trust in us. Therefore, it is part of our responsibility as martial artists to learn the skills needed to better help those around us. When we become better training partners, we benefit not only our peers, but also the art itself and our own practice.
In this overview, we will explore both introspective and practical strategies that can be applied to improve as a training partner in HEMA. These strategies will form the basis of a toolkit to enable both you and your drill partners to get the most possible benefit from training together. We will discuss approaches to help you effectively mentor fellow practitioners of all experience levels; get more out of training when skill differentials are present; mitigate frustration and burnout; and improve communication between you and your partner.
